Coffee Machine Review: La Marzocco GS3

In this review, we are going to go through the things we love about La Marzocco GS3 coffee machine, and some of the things that we don’t quite like about it.

Overall It Looks Beautiful

  • We love the amazing steamer.
  • The hop top is great.
  • The drip tray is huge.

The Pressure Profile:

Coffee Machine Review: La Marzocco GS3

We like the pressure profile and being able to play with the gauge. It is very sensitive. You need to put your finger on the front of the brew head then push up to it, so that you can get your specific 3, 6 or whatever bar ratio you would put into that water, we found it very finicky.

We know other users that have been using this machine really struggle with that, so they tend to go straight up to 9 bar and then cut it off when they need to.

It’s a delicate process. It’s for the barista that’s searching to get that really nice specifics out of coffee, whether it be ramping from 3 to 6 to 9 bar and coming back. It’s a bit geeky. So if you’re not geeky, we do not recommend you to get this model, just get La Marzocco AV model which will automatically brew it for you.

Coffee Brewing:

To be able to get the most out of this machine and to be able to play with the different pressures, you’ve got to be able to change the different grinds and have a nice good reference point to be able to taste the differences on the other end.

If you want to go to that next level on how to make your coffee better when compared to commercial models, you need to get a high quality grinder to achieve a better extraction and flavor profile.

You will do injustice to this whole technology of pressure profiling and temperature changes by not having a grinder that is very standardized.

The IOT App:

With the app, you can turn the machine on and off, and change the temperatures. It’s handy and pretty easy. It does allow you to do some of the basics that you’d want to and gives you reports about your extractions as well.

We would love to read what you think about the new IOT app that’s available in Marzocco GS3? So please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The Water Tank:

With the flexibility of being able to have different pressure through the head, you’re basically bypassing that water into the drip tray. You may find that you run out of water so often. It’s frustrating!

When you go to hit this lever, the pump kicks would kick in for like 2 seconds. It wets the puck and it’s all over, it says “refill tank”.

The machine comes with a plumbing kit. We would highly advise plumping this from day one, because when you start to really play with this 3-6-9 bar, you’re just using so much water. It’s a waste!

The Steamer:

In terms of the steamer, the arm is great, the tip stays hot and holds a little bit of moisture. So just give it a really good purge and you’re ready to go. The hot tap is fantastic. You’d need to adjust it to the right temperature.

Should You Buy La Marzocco GS3?

Compared to Linea Mini, the GS3 has the same steam pressure, brewing quality, and all the things that are standard with La Marzocco. If you don’t want to do the pressure profiling, we don’t advise you to spend the extra money in getting the GS3 over the Linea Mini.

Overall, La Marzocco GS3 is a great home machine that enables you to brew coffee how you enjoy making it.

Happy coffee brewing!
